Open Hours
  • Wednesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The McCarthy Gallery in Holekamp Hall is open Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The Watson Galleries are temporarily closed for installations and will reopen October 2, 2024.

Join us for Q&A Coffee Session with Masako Konishi, the Chief Merchandising Officer at Forever 21. Masako will share her experiences in DE&I work in fashion and her advocacy for the success of women of color in the retail industry. Prior to Forever 21, she has held leadership roles at a variety of iconic brands, including Victoria’s Secret, Gap, Banana Republic, Fashion Nova, Abercrombie & Fitch, James Perse, and 7 For All Mankind. She is a founding member of VS & Co’s Executive Diversity Council.

Join artist Stephanie Shih for a mini-exhibition tour of LONG TIME NO SEE, learn about how still lives are a powerful medium for telling personal narratives, and create your own mini still life composition. Bring a personal item of significance to incorporate into your still life photo, which you'll make with the artist in a still life photobooth. Two 75-minute sessions are available. Seats are limited. Free and open to all.

For the Love of Plants: Plant Worlds in the Shadows of Empire

Banu Subramaniam (Author of Botany of Empire, Professor and Chair of Women and Gender Studies at Wellesley College)

Plants worlds are deeply entangled in human worlds. Drawing on recent interdisciplinary scholarship in feminist, postcolonial and indigenous studies, Professor Banu Subramaniam, a renowned plant evolutionary biologist and scholar in feminist science studies and environmental humanities, will reflect on how gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation shape the foundational language, terminology, and theories of the modern plant sciences, and how botanical theories remain grounded in the violence of their colonial pasts. Professor Subramaniam wrestles with these difficult origins and lays a roadmap to imagine new biological frameworks that harness the power of feminist thought to reimagine and reinvigorate our love of plants.

Join Ceramicist, Stanford Art Institute Director, and Physics Professor Hideo Mabuchi as he explores how everyday objects, like Chinese and Japanese export porcelain, tell stories that resonate differently with scholars, scientists, and artists, drawing from his own perspective as both a scientist and artist. Professor Mabuchi will also share insights on the current exhibition Stephanie Shih: LONG TIME NO SEE (好久不見), on view at the Reeves Museum of Ceramics, examining how the physical characteristics of ceramics carry deeper meanings that shed light on issues of identity, immigration, and cultural belonging within the Asian diaspora and Asian-American experience.

Participants will learn how it came to dominate our roadsides and borderlands, how to identify and use it throughout its lifecycle, and how to prepare it in delicious mugwort rice cakes (青团). Join us for an engaging museum talk with Rachel Du, a Chinese art specialist and porcelain expert at Bonhams. Rachel will delve into the history of Chinese art collecting in the West, shedding light on the contributions of Gilded Age millionaires, missionaries, and art dealers who played key roles in establishing significant Chinese art collections outside of East Asia. Rachel will provide valuable insights into the current Chinese art market and how geopolitical factors, such as the impact of COVID-19, influence the market.

One day each year – April 13 in 2024 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. This year, participants will practice looking the still life photographs of Stephanie Shih in our current exhibition, Open Flowers Bear Fruit. This program is free and open to all ages!

Professor Sheats will offer insights into his influential role as an arts leader, reflecting on the role of academic museums as catalysts for change and the enduring impact of the Galleries’ groundbreaking exhibition, African Modernism in America, the first major traveling exhibition to examine the complex connections between modern African artists and American patrons, artists, and cultural organizations.

African American student activism has a rich history at Washington and Lee University. The Museums at 六合厅开奖现场 is thrilled to preserve part of that history in a new collection acquisition, a jean jacket worn by an early member of the Student Association for Black Unity (SABU) in the 1970s. Join Laura Murambadoro (current SABU president) and Nalleli Guillen (the Museums' History Curator) for a conversation about SABU's impact on campus and examine this piece of history up close.

Victoria Ferguson has spent 25 years seeking first-person documentation and archaeological information to help explain and support theories on the daily living habits of the Eastern Siouan populations up through the early European colonization period.
